Oulton Park Drama Sets Up a Nail-Biting Championship Decider for 7 Racing

Oil, gravel, red flags and a hard-fought fightback - Oulton Park delivered plenty of drama as 7 Racing and Trans-Rak International headed into the penultimate round of the championship.

With Trans-Rak proudly sponsoring 7 Racing, this weekend was always going to be one to watch. And with our very own Wes Payne behind the wheel of the Trans-Rak liveried Caterham, there was plenty of reason for the Trans-Rak team to be cheering from the sidelines.

After weeks of unusually dry weather across the UK, both days at Oulton Park began damp, making for tricky conditions and plenty of uncertainty as the drivers battled for position.

Wes put in a strong qualifying performance to line up 5th on the grid, but with the leading pack proving tough to match for pace, the focus quickly turned to keeping the car clean and banking valuable championship points.

Race 1: Oil, chaos and a 4th-place finish

If anyone thought Race 1 was going to be straightforward, they were quickly proved wrong.

Oil was laid down around virtually the entire circuit, turning Oulton Park into a skating rink and catching out several drivers. Among those caught by the treacherous conditions was championship rival Carl Jones, who found himself taking an unscheduled trip into the scenery.

Wes, however, kept his head and, crucially, kept the Caterham on the black stuff.

A composed drive saw him cross the line in 4th place, securing another valuable haul of championship points in what was becoming an increasingly tense title battle.

Race 2: Gravel, red flags and a fightback

Then came Race 2 - and this time, it was the Trans-Rak liveried Caterham that found itself heading off circuit.

Wes’s excursion into the gravel brought out the red flags, but there was no giving up. Restarting from the pits, he set about fighting his way back into the action.

With time running out, Wes simply didn’t have enough laps to close the gap to the leading pack, but a determined recovery drive brought the Caterham home in 6th place.

Meanwhile, Carl Jones took victory, adding another twist to an already nail-biting championship.

Everything to play for at Brands Hatch

With the Oulton Park points added to the tally, the championship is now wide open.

And there could hardly be a more fitting venue for the showdown.

The championship decider heads to Brands Hatch GP on 19th and 20th September, where every position, every point and every lap could make the difference.
