Transporting vehicles via shipping container is the safest and often fastest way in which to move your vehicles over long distances.
The cost of transporting your vehicles utilising this method can be higher than with the Roll on Roll off (RoRo) method, unless you utilise a Trans-Rak car storage racking system to increase the number of vehicles which can be transported in each container.
Container Options For Transporting Vehicles
There are several different high cube container shipping options for transporting vehicles across the ocean; the most readily available include the 20 foot, 40 foot, 45 foot and 53 foot options.
1) 20 Foot Containers
20 foot containers are a good, cost effective option if you want to move a smaller number of vehicles; Trans-Rak can work with you to ensure you can fit two vehicles in this sized shipping container, using our adjustable R-RAK system.
2) 40 Foot Containers
A 40 foot container is available for utilisation through most shipping companies and a good option for transporting up to 6 vehicles.
While the number of vehicles which can be accommodated in the container will depend on the size of the particular vehicles, with a good reusable racking system you can expect to transport:
- 5 – 6 small cars such as the Fiat 500
- 4 – 5 medium sized cars, such as the Honda Civic
- 4 large cars, such as the Hyundai i40; and
- 3 mid-size SUVs, such as the Range Rover Evoque Sport
3) 45 Foot Containers
45 foot containers are a great option if you want to move up to 6 medium sized vehicles, such as the Honda Civic. However, moving this number of vehicles is only achievable and cost effective if you use a car storage racking system. Otherwise you will end up with a lot of underutilised space in your container.
The R-RAK system is perfect for this job, getting all 6 of your vehicles to you in a faster timeframe than is available through other methods of transportation.
4) 53 Foot Containers
If you are looking to move approximately 4 or 5 large vehicles at one time, such as an Audi Q7 or BMW X5, you can achieve this using a 53 foot container and two adjustable R-RAKs.
